"This paper shows that RAS functions to regulate a cascade of serine/threonine kinases, which plays an important role in promoting cell growth, or, as with NGF, cell differentiation. This is particularly significant for Raf-1, because although genetic data had suggested that Raf-1 functions downstream of RAS, biochemical findings had suggested that Raf-1 could be regulated, in some cases, by receptor-mediated tyrosine phosphorylation. We provide biochemical data to support a pathway in which intermediates, including RAS, function to regulate serine/threonine phosphorylation and activation of Raf-1.
