Go with the Flow: Adapting Lateral Flow Assays for Nucleic Acid Detection

Scientists incorporate sensitive nanoparticles to rapidly detect DNA and RNA.

Lateral flow assays (LFAs), such as the COVID-19 rapid test, are powerful devices to rapidly detect a protein’s presence or absence. This assay is so easy to perform that it enables at-home testing, but its widespread adoption for other applications has been curbed by several limitations. To increase LFA sensitivity and testing capacity, researchers adapted LFA technology so they can detect RNA or DNA instead of proteins.
