A member of the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Bernard Roizman believes that "science is a search for the truth and better understanding of our environment. In return, scientists have a responsibility to contribute to the betterment of the world in which we live."

Roizman's contribution has been great; through the deeper understanding of the molecular biology of the herpes simplex virus, his research has opened the way for an understanding of the molecular basis of diseases caused by herpesviruses and of their prevention. Roizman was chosen by his fellow scientists to receive the first ICN International Prize in Virology, the largest prize in the field of virology, given by ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Costa Mesa, Calif., to honor seminal research in virology. Roizman is also one of the founding scientists at Aviron, a biopharmaceutical firm in Burlingame, Calif., focusing on disease prevention.
