Cyclins are found associated with the serine/threonine protein kinase, p34cdc2, as components of the mitosis-specific histone H1 kinase and M-phase Promoting Factor (MPF). Cyclins, which were first found in cleaving embryos, such as clams, sea urchins, and frogs, are characterized by their constant synthesis during interphase and specific destruction at mitosis.
