As an immunochemist and cell biologist, Eva Engvall has led scientific advances that touch people's lives daily. Her thesis work on the development of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) provided the foundation for numerous assays now used in clinics as well as in home pregnancy tests.

Today, Engvall's lab focuses on identifying and characterizing the proteins constituting extracellular matrices to understand how these proteins influence cell behavior. Engvall and her colleagues have identified and characterized one specific protein that, when mutated, results in muscular dystrophy.

With science becoming increasingly integrated with people's everyday lives, Engvall believes that scientists need to be better informed than ever in order to be effective. Engvall says: "THE SCIENTIST is very valuable in giving an overall picture of what's going on ...
