Frank Press, former scientific adviser to President Carter, sees many problems currently facing the scientific community, such as uncertain federal funding and the restructuring of university and industry research. But, he believes, "The extraordinary opportunities for scientific progress and the potential for science to contribute to society will ultimately win out. The results of these inquiries will convince the American public that science is worth supporting and following."

After 12 years as president of the National Academy of Sciences, Press has returned to the laboratory to continue his research in geophysics and writing college textbooks. Since 1993, he has also been a visiting faculty member at the California Institute of Technology, Cornell University, and Stanford University.
