Robert Hoffmann, director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, has been named Assistant Secretary for Research, effective January 1, 1988. Prior to joining the Smithsonian staff, Hoffmann was Summerfield Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and curator of mammals at the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History. As assistant secretary, Hoffmann will serve as the principal adviser to the secretary and undersecretary on the Smithsonian’s research activities. He will also oversee research programs at the National Zoological Park, the Astrophysical Observatory and other Smithsonian centers. Hoffmann replaces David Chaillnor, who will retire after more than 20 years in Smithsonian management.
