Three MIT scientists, Robert Horvitz, Richard O. Hynes and Susumu Tonegawa, have been appointed Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators as part of a new long-term collaborative agreement to conduct biomedical research at MIT. Caroline L. Herzenberg, Argonne National Laboratory, became president of the national Association for Women in Science, succeeding Barbara Filner of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Stepanie Bird, of the MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department, was named president elect and Sheila Pfafflin of AT&T continues as vice president. Christine Hampton Hunsaker of Oak Ridge National Laboratory was elected treasurer. Sheila Lukehart of Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and Barbara Sloat of the University of Michigan were made councilors.
