Although it was more than 20 years ago that John Olney [The Scientist, Feb. 5, 1990, page 1] found that excess exposure to glutamate could kill brain neurons, it has been just in the last few years that strong evidence has appeared, linking glutamate neurotoxicity with the pathogenesis of neuronal loss after acute insults. Further enthusiasm has been generated by speculations that glutamate receptor-mediated neurotoxicity may also be involved in chronic neurodegenerative diseases.
