The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) was founded in 1971 with the mission of promoting women's advancement in science. As president-elect of AWIS, Jaleh Daie considers this mission to be more a societal issue than a women's issue. Her goal is to expand the association's impact and call attention to its role in the scientific community. Daie believes that the next frontier for women in science and engineering is leadership in policy-making arenas.

Daie has shown leadership in both research and teaching. She has made significant contributions to understanding the mechanisms of sugar transport as well as carbohydrate metabolism and partitioning in plants. For example, she pioneered the use of ELISA for detection of plant hormones. Daie ...
