I would like to compliment you on a fine review of the events that occur during a radioactive decomposition that is transmitted through several phase shifters and is eventually detected as photons ["Environmentalists Toast New Liquid Scintillation Cocktails," The Scientist, June 25, 1990, page 23]. This is truly a "black box" for quite a few people. I would, however, like to present my views, which differ significantly from yours, on the use of drain- dischargeable cocktails. As you point out,

This is truly a "black box" for quite a few people. I would, however, like to present my views, which differ significantly from yours, on the use of drain- dischargeable cocktails.

As you point out, there is increased awareness of environ- mental issues. The press is full of topics such as smog, various oil spills, the environment--the list is very long. The message is: We need to protect our environment.

However, your article, and advertisements from manufacturers, send the message to the academic arena that some chemicals are marginally hazardous and are permitted to be disposed of in our water system. These chemicals that are ...
