First, the number of Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) cameras for biological microscopy is staggering (the accompanying table shows typical properties of one-third of available models). The cameras are composed of a sensor (the CCD) and an analog-to-digital converter; the reading of light by individual sensor elements generates an image composed of a two-dimensional array of pixels (or "picture elements").
