However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms by which these proteins operate to regulate transcription initiation.

"We have isolated a gene encoding the human transcription factor hUBF [human upstream binding factor], which interacts with the essential factor SL1 to activate transcription of ribosomal RNA by RNA polymerase I in the nucleolus. hUBF is the first of a growing number of transcription factors that has a DNA-binding domain homologous to the chromosomal proteins HMG [high mobility group] 1 and 2, thus defining a new ...
