This paper describes the role of a secreted signaling protein, called hedgehog (hh), during the development of the limbs of Drosophila. "Each limb of the fly is formed by two groups of cells, the anterior and posterior compartment. The hh protein is secreted by all the cells in the posterior compartment, and not at all by the anterior compartment cells," explains Gary Struhl, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and a professor of genetics and development at the Columbia University College of Physicians and ...
