Ashley was born in 1991 with a condition in which stomach acid refluxed into her esophagus, meaning she had to be fed by a tube with a special liquid formula through a permanent hole in her abdomen. However, gas build-up in Ashley's stomach sometimes caused the food to back up, resulting in discomfort and the risk of dehydration.
