I would tend to agree with the idea expressed in Craig Sinclair’s letter (The Scientist, July 10, 1989, page 12) that "... the NATO Advanced Workshop/Study Institute prointo grams fall exactly into the category of ‘best type of conference book.’ “I would, however, suggest that long delays in publication are the dark side of NATO’s publication program.
As an example, “Collision theory for atoms and molecules,” which will soon be published, is the proceedings of a NATO ASI held Sept. 14-26, 1987. It has been my general policy not to purchase proceedings that are more than a year old. Is this a reasonable policy?
