"L-NG-nitro arginine (L-NOARG) and its methyl ester derivative (L-NAME) are structural analogs of L-arginine, a substance that is the natural precursor for nitric oxide formation by an increasingly wide spectrum of biological tissues.

"Although at least one other such inhibitor was available for use at the time, L-NOARG had the advantage of greater effectiveness and solubility and, perhaps more important, ease of availability.

"Our discovery has proved of interest to fellow researchers because inhibitors of nitric oxide biosynthesis provide useful tools for studying the biological significance of nitric oxide.
