" A long-sought goal in superstring theory has been to derive the theory by a method that keeps as much symmetry as possible manifest. An important bit of progress along those lines is reported.

" Data on the distribution of quasars and Lyman-alpha clouds—two important classes of objects that can be seen at very large redshift, and thus mark signposts charting the early universe— have been accumulating at an accelerated rate. This distribution can now be analyzed, to given constraints on models for the formation of structure in the universe.
