As head of the division of oncology/hematology at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Roy Silverstein is deeply involved in vascular studies examining the interplay between thrombosis and arteriosclerosis.

The concept that abnormal activation of endothelial cells may contribute to vascular disease and may be caused by a variety of agents not previously examined has been a major focus of his research. "We and our collaborators have shown that herpes virus can activate endothelial cells, and that antibodies from patients with lupus can activate these cells. It's beginning to broaden our concept of how blood vessels are rendered dysfunctional in certain diseases," he notes.
