Frederick, Md.-based Syngene http://www.syngene.com has just released the G:BOX, a modular image analysis system designed for a range of applications and budgets. Chief among its features is an accessible darkroom that allows users to swap out components – for example, cameras, filters, lenses, and lighting – so that the system itself can be modified as the user's needs change.

Company spokesperson Paula Maia explains that customers who may have less equipment money from grants still want a state-of-the-art instrument, but until now they have only been able to purchase packaged systems. "What we felt we needed to do was to give customers a system that they could tailor for their particular needs and their particular applications without giving them bells and whistles that they would never use," she says.

The system's pricing reflects that one-size-does-not-fit-all approach; G:BOX configurations range in price from below $10,000 to $50,000 (US).
