Agencies Partner to Help Commercialize Biomedical Discoveries

Collaborative effort from the US National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health offers business training for federally funded researchers.

The pilot program, known as I-Corps, “will help teach NIH-funded start-ups how to build scalable business models around new technologies they’re developing for the detection and treatment of disease,” Michael Weingarten, director of the National Cancer Institute Small Business Innovation Research Development Center, said in a statement.

Four NIH institutes are part of this pilot program: the National Cancer Institute; the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke; and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.

The curriculum is described as a nine-week boot camp, in which 24 selected research teams will work with experienced instructors to explore potential markets for their federally-funded projects. The program aims to help companies learn to deal with protecting intellectual property, developing ...
