As an expert system's knowledge base grows, it becomes more and more difficult to ensure its correctness and acceptability. A four-part model of validation based on experience building diagnostic expert systems is presented here.

The championship chess match between Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov features perhaps the last two active human players who can defeat the chess playing program Deep Thought. An article by the designers of that program describes how Deep Thought plays so well and compares it with other programs. Plans for the next version of the program are given.
