The Polish Connection
For some Eastern European countries, the problem of gaining access to medical information has made it difficult to develop adequate health care systems. Poland's medical community, which has long suffered because of the high costs of printed material and insufficient foreign currency, has taken steps to acquire up-to-date research. The Polish Central Medical Library in Warsaw and the British Medical Association Library in London, coupled with the nonprofit, international health communications organization SatelLife, have initiated a direct satellite transmission program, which will enable Poland to gain access to some of the leading research that is published in the West.

Tony McSean, BMA librarian, says that the program is now under way in a "preliminary, rudimentary" form, and SatelLife hopes it will be fully operational by the end of this month. Polish physicians and scientists can gain access to BMA's information by requesting a search from a PCM ...
