Kahn (Laboratory of Biological Chemistry, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md.): "Identified in 1980 as a factor required for the efficient ADP-ribosylation of the stimulatory, regulatory component of adenylate cyclase, Gs, ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF) remained a curiosity. By the late 1980s evidence accumulated that ARF proteins were involved in the regulation of protein traffic, though details were lacking. The lack of a neutralizing antibody and difficulty in obtaining subcellular fractions devoid of ARF made it difficult to define specific role(s) for ARF proteins using biochemical assays.
