Comments by Dan L. Eaton, Genentech Inc., South San Francisco, Calif.

This paper describes the purification, cloning, amino acid sequence, and biological activity of a thrombopoietin-like protein. "For over three decades, people have been trying to identify the growth factor [protein] that regulates megakaryocytopoiesis, or blood platelet production," remarks Dan L. Eaton, senior scientist at Genentech Inc., a biotech firm in South San Francisco, Calif. "It's been quite a journey."
