More than 15 million people in the United States suffer from non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). No less than 40 million are obese. With so many sufferers, it should be no surprise that this paper, which provides a possible molecular explanation linking these costly and often fatal disorders, is so widely cited.
