Teasing out the intricate biochemical details of how a hormone or growth factor binds to a cell-surface receptor-in turn activating genes inside the cell's nucleus-has been a hot topic of research in the last few years. This paper describes binding sites for the proteins Grb2 and Shc on the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Both proteins contain the much-studied SH2 domain, a region of about 100 amino acids that controls portions of a variety of signal transduction pathways.
