GTE Sponsors Science And Society Talks
"Technology and Ethics" is the theme of the 1990-91 GTE Lectureship Program, which provides grants of up to $4,000 to sponsor talks on university and college campuses about science, technology, and society. The program seeks to encourage public awareness and participation in issues related to science and technology and to stimulate universities to develop an interdisciplinary focus on these issues both inside and outside their campuses.

The S&H Foundation began the program 30 years ago, and GTE, the Stamford, Conn.-based telecommunications firm, has sponsored it since 1985. In the past four years, 350 proposals have been funded; 52 awards were made in the past year.

GTE will cover reasonable honoraria, supplies, and refreshments, plus travel, publicity, and the cost of facilities. It will not pay for overhead, staff charges, personnel benefits, or fees for speakers from the host institution. It favors programs with more ...
