Brian Wilkinson, professor of civil engineering and deputy dean of the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham, U.K., has been appointed director of the Natural Environment Research Council’s Institute of Hydrology and head of NERC's Wallingford Laboratory, effective July 5. John Bourne, professor and head of the department of veterinary medicine at the University of Bristol, U.K., since 1980, will succeed P.M. Biggs as director of animal health research at the Agricultural and Food Research Council, on September 1. Bourne has been head of the Bristol veterinary school since 1985. Sherman Bloom, a cardiovascular pathologist at the George Washington University Medical Center, has succeeded W. Jean Dodds, chief of the New York State Department of Health Laboratory of Hematology, as president of the Scientists Center for Animal Welfare in Bethesda, Md. Bloom has served on the center’s board of trustees for six years. John Knill, professor of engineering geology at Imperial College, London, will become chairman of the U.K. Natural Environment Research Council on October 1. He succeeds Hugh Fish in the five-year appointment. Knill has been head of the Imperial College geology department since 1979 and chairman of the Centre for Remote Sensing since 1984. Rolf Zinkernagel, University of Zurich Department of Pathology, John J. Skehel, National Institute of Medical Research, Mill Hill, Great Britain, and Bert Sakmann, head of the cell physiology department at the Max Planck Institute for biophysical chemistry in Gottingen, will receive the Louis Jeantet Prize for Medicine April 15 in Geneva. The researchers are honored for having “improved our understanding of how cells communicate and interact through their cell membrane with chemical structures such as neurotransmitters, antibodies and viruses.” Joshua Jortner of Tel Aviv University and Ralphael D. Levine of Hebrew University, Jerusalem, will share the $100,000 1988 Wolf Prize in Chemistry for “their incisive theoretical studies elucidating energy acquisition and disposal in molecular systems and mechanisms for dynamical selectivity and specificity.” Jortner and Levine are the first Israelis to receive the Israel-based Wolf Foundation’s chemistry prize. Isabella L. Karle, senior scientist for structural chemistry at the Naval Research Laboratory and head of the X-ray diffraction section of NRL’s Laboratory for Structure Matter, was awarded the Department of the Navy Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science. Karle earned the $5,000 award for her contributions to the development and application of the symbolic addition procedure for Xray crystallography. She has been with NRL since 1946. Mitchell J. Feigenbaum, theoretical physicist and professor at The Rockefeller University, was given Carnegie Mellon University’s 1987 Dickson Prize for Science. Feigenbaumrs established the field of chaotic dynamics and developed a mathematical dialect that expresses the behavior of nature as it moves toward chaos. André Frederic Cournand, 92, retired professor of medicine at Columbia University and winner of the 1956 Nobel Prize for perfecting the catheterization process used to explore the human heart, died of pneumonia February 19 at his home in Great Barrington, Mass. Cournand,a native of Paris, graduated from the Sorbonne and was awarded the Croix de Guerre with three stars while he served in the French Army during World War I. He joined Columbia in 1930 and was a founding member of the Universal Movement for Scientific Responsibility. Brookhaven National Laboratory is now accepting applications for the Renate W. Chasman Scholarship for Women, which was established to encourage Long Island women whose education was interrupted to continue formal studies in science, engineering or math. Brookhaven Women in Science will present the one-time award of $1,000 in August. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens who live in Nassau or Suffolk County, New York.
