With the advent of AIDS and the increased attention to bloodborne pathogens that the crisis has garnered, the hepatitis viruses have not been so prominent in the public eye. The hepatitis A and B viruses have been known for a long time, and researchers have long since developed screens to prevent their spread through the blood supply. But the 1989 discovery of a new virus--hepatitis C--raised the specter that more varieties of this common and sometimes-deadly viral class could be out there....
