Jean Weissenbach (Genethon, Evry, France): "In 1991, the French Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Center for the Study of Human Polymorphisms (CEPH) created Genethon, a laboratory whose goal was to provide the scientific community with human genome maps that would hasten the localization and identification of human disease genes.

"The first version of the Genethon genetic linkage map was published in October 1992. Its advantage lies in the fact that it is composed of 813 simple tandem repeats (microsatellites), notably (CA)n motifs, which are widely distributed throughout the human genome. As first shown by J.L. Weber and P.E.
