The center's primary objective will be to isolate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from adults' bone marrow and distribute them to research labs nationwide. Because of the difficulty in preparing MSCs the same way repeatedly, cell composition could differ if multiple labs prepare the cells, thus skewing test results. The grant will allow the center to prepare a large number of similar MSCs and distribute them to any lab that wants them, says John Harding, health science administrator at the NCRR. Darwin Prockop, director of the Tulane Center, says that with facilities already in place, the distribution can begin within a few weeks. The consistent distribution of ready-made MSCs from one source has prompted support from the community of scientists who investigate stem cells. Prockop says the center received 162 letters of support from researchers. MSCs are pluripotent, with the ability to differentiate into many cell types. Prior research suggests MSCs have potential applications for the treatment of injuries to the spinal cord, lungs, and heart, and diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson. MSCs differ in origin from their controversial cousins, embryonic stem cells (ESCs), which are believed to have more potential applications than MSCs. However, research using MSCs may provide some clues to ESCs while bypassing the ethical problems that have made them a contentious issue in Congress.
