Vasios (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston): "Retinoids such as vitamin A and retinoic acid (RA), when exogenously applied in experimental systems, exert profound effects on vertebrate development, as well as on the process of malignant transformation in vivo and in vitro. Recently, the significance of these results was further enhanced by biochemical evidence showing that RA is present in chick embryos and may play a role in normal limb development. In addition, RA's potential use in cancer therapy was demonstrated through clinical trials that resulted in temporary remission in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia.
