There is substantial interest in the pleiotropic biological activities of interleukin 4 (IL-4), and the molecular cloning of the IL-4 receptor provides a necessary first step toward understanding how IL-4 transduces so many different signals in different cell types. The structure of the extracellular, ligand-binding domain of the receptor showed significant homology with other cytokine receptors (IL-2Rb, erythropoietin, IL-6), and we and others have since extended this observation to define an extensive new family of cytokine receptors. ...
