As charged-couple device (CCD) cameras became less expensive, electronic hardware to create digital images became available, and sophisticated image enhancement and analysis software was developed, electronic gel documentation systems were introduced and have become an essential laboratory instrument for molecular biological research. Researchers can choose among a large variety of systems depending on their needs and budget.
