The JLA-16.250 J-Lite is a large-capacity, fixed-angle rotor with a maximum capacity of 1,500 ml. Designed for use in the company's Avanti J Series of centrifuges, the new rotor generates a maximum force of 38,500 x g at its rated speed of 16,000 rpm. These centrifuges feature a high-torque drive system that accelerates and brakes reportedly in half the time of conventional high-speed drives for higher speeds and g-forces with larger volumes. Beckman Instruments Inc. Fullerton, CA The line of Mini-Polyacrylamide Precast Gels for use in mini electrophoresis is available in single or multi-gel packs. Both 8 x 10 cm and 10 x 10 cm formats are available. The gels come with Tris-HCl and Tris-Tricine buffer systems as well as gels for isoelectric focusing. Gels with the Tris-HCl buffers are suitable for separating proteins and nucleic acids. They are offered in concentrations of 5 percent, 7.5 percent, 10 percent, 12.5 percent, and 15 percent or gradient concentration ranges of 2 percent to 5 percent, 4 percent to 20 percent, and 10 percent to 27 percent. Gels with the Tris Tricine buffers are recommended for separating low-molecular weight proteins and peptides. They are available in a 10 percent to 20 percent concentration. Polyacrylamide gels for isoelectric focusing have an IEF pH range of 3 to 10. Sigma Chemical Co. St. Louis, MO The Genesis line of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns, packed in Finesse cartridge column hardware, is suitable for pharmaceutical, environmental, food, and natural product applications. The columns are packed with new base-deactivated reverse-phase packing materials, which reportedly results in enhanced stability in acidic and basic media. According to the company, the columns combine ultrahigh- purity silica, high-density bonding, and optimum end capping to provide pH stability and low secondary activity toward basic and acidic analytes. They are available in C18 and C8 phases. Jones Chromatography USA Inc. Lakewood, CO The 206 Fraction Collector is designed to collect eluent from chromatographic separations either manually or in an automatic mode at flow rates up to 800 ml per minute. The instrument features six collection modes to meet virtually any fraction collection requirement: manual, time, peak plus time, time program, and peak plus time program. After injection of the sample, users can monitor the detector's signal during a selected time window to check whether the chromatographic separation is progressing as expected. If no compound is eluted from the column within the expected retention time window, the collector is stopped. The collector accepts a variety of test tubes and bottles, including up to 108 10-mm test tubes. Ten different racks can be used along with one thermostatic rack. Gilson Inc. Middleton, WI The Misonix PCR Prep Station provides laminar flow protection and ultraviolet lighting designed to prevent the contamination of nucleic acid samples by airborne particulates of earlier experiments. The company claims that ultraviolet lighting inactivates all DNA/RNA contamination within minutes to ensure reliable results during sample preparation for nucleic acid amplification. Air flows through both a pre-filter and a HEPA filter for sterility. The 24-inch-wide unit incorporates a polycarbonate base and a low speed fan. Misonix Inc. Farmingdale, NY Quantix is a cooled charge-coupled device (CCD) camera designed to deliver low read noise at readout rates of 5 million pixels per second. It reportedly provides the image quality, linearity, and sensitivity essential for timeresolved or low-light environment applications. The cooling feature is claimed to extend exposure time and thereby allow accurate detection and measurement of extremely faint signals. Cooling to -25°C is achieved via a self-contained, forced-air cooling system. The instrument also can be equipped with a liquid circulation unit that cools to -35°C. The system features three imaging modes: high sensitivity, for detecting weak signals; high dynamic range, for measuring bright and dim signals within the same image; and high signal-to-noise ratio, for bright field imaging. The camera controller, digitization, and computer interface are consolidated within one camera head. The camera may be connected to all commonly used microscopes and lenses with a C- or F-mount and a high-speed shutter. Photometrics Ltd. Tucson, AZ The Centra-CL3/CL3R (refrigerated) centrifuges offer microprocessor control of speeds with accuracies to the nearest 10 rpm, selectable temperatures in 1-C increments, automatic calculation of g-force, and the ability to store and lock up to 99 protocols. An "At Speed" Timer mode begins timing down when the units reach operating speed. Both units have brushless motors, which reportedly eliminate the need for periodic maintenance and allow for quiet operation. The company also has introduced the 243 Swinging Bucket Rotor, which accepts conventional Sealed Aerocarriers that accommodate .25 ml to 250 ml samples. Exchanging of rotors is accomplished with a quick release/mounting mechanism. International Equipment Co. Needham Heights, MA The Windows-based mView software package is designed for video imaging with visible and infrared microscopes. Supporting both NTSC and PAL video standards, the software enables sample viewing, image capture, annotation, and documentation. It works with a video camera and video capture board to capture images from the microscope and display them on the system's computer data station monitor. The live sample image appears in a video pane in the Windows application. It features a scale in microns surrounding the video image for metrology and cross-hair annotation to indicate the center of the field of view. It also includes a tool palette that may be used to measure distances on or between samples, draw on a sample, indicate areas of interest, and add text. The video image menu enables users to adjust hue, contrast, brightness, and color of the sample. The software produces image files containing true color for hard-copy printing. Images may be saved and then placed into any Windows application that accepts images. Spectra-Tech Inc. Shelton, CT The PerfectFit gel kits include two combs, two sets of spacers, five sets of glass plates, and 50 sheets of porous cellophane for drying acrylamide gels after electrophoresis. The virgin Teflon combs reportedly are burr-free and non curling to form uniform wells. They are available in small and large 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, and 25-well combinations in .75 mm and 1.5 mm thicknesses. The PVC spacers are machined flat to minimize plate breakage owing to unequal pressure points when gel clamps are attached. The glass plates for tall or small gel boxes are available in many sizes. Custom-made sequencing plates are also available, both standard and optically clear. The Gel Company San Francisco, CA The Model DL36 Karl Fischer coulometric titrator is designed for routine trace water content analysis. It is a singlemethod version of the company's advanced-application predecessor, the Model DL 37. The new DL36 is equipped with three standard interface connections for a printer, balance, and a PC or LIMS. To start the titration with the DL36, the user injects a sample through the septum and presses the Run key. Sample weights may be entered manually or transferred automatically from a balance before or after the titration. The progress of the analysis is displayed as it happens. Final results may be recorded by an optional plain-paper printer. The titrator performs the determination with parameters that can be changed to suit application requirements. The result unit can be selected as ml, ml percent, or ppm. The titrant life is monitored and the user warned when the titrant is exhausted. The instrument may be linked with the company's DO305 Drying Oven to evaporate moisture in solids or complex samples that cannot be directly tested in the DL36. Mettler-Toledo Inc. Hightstown, NJ The TD-700 Fluorometer is designed to quantitate Aequorea victoria green fluorescent protein (GFP). GFP is a marker used to monitor gene expression in a variety of organisms. Unlike other reporters, GFP is claimed to fluoresce in the absence of any other intrinsic or extrinsic proteins, substrates, or cofactors. Its fluorescence is reportedly stable and species independent, and can be monitored noninvasively. The instrument comes standard with a multi-assay filter cylinder, multi-point calibration, and an RS232 serial interface. Turner Designs Inc. Sunnyvale, CA WaterSense is an automatic water faucet controller that attaches directly to existing faucets. It is designed to eliminate the need to touch potentially contaminated faucet handles. It features ultrasonic sensors and a microprocessing system that are powered by a standard 9-volt battery. A low battery-indicator light gives notice six weeks in advance of when the battery needs to be replaced. An auto/manual switch in front of the unit allows for normal faucet operation. Yorktown Research Inc. South Hackensack, NJ The Powerpette Digital pipetting controller enables a variety of functions, such as multi-dispensing, series dispensing, and conventional pipetting, to be programmed and controlled via a key pad and LCD display. Volume selection on the LCD display allows use of the instrument with nongraduated pipettes. Suitable for pipettes from 1 ml to 25 ml, the pipetting controller features a pipette adapter that can be rotated to suit either left- or right-handed pipetting. Rechargeable batteries allow for more than 2,000 uses without recharging, the company claims. The instrument comes with a recharging stand and 2 x .045 mm hydrophobic filters. JENCONS Scientific Bridgeville, PA The GDS8000 Gel Documentation System combines a personal computer and other equipment necessary for users to view, document, and analyze gels, films, and membranes. The images may be saved for analysis and presentation on other PCs or Macintosh computers. The workstation can be configured with the following components: a 1 gigabyte hard drive/16 megabyte RAM Pentium 133 computer loaded with DOS, Windows, and Grab-It image acquisition kit as well as color monitor, keyboard, mouse, and pad; fluorescent darkroom with white/UV light transilluminator; charge-coupled device (CCD) camera with zoom lens and UV filter; a thermal printer; and GelBase/GelBlot Pro Image Analysis Software for 1-D densitometry and molecular weight calibration.
