James S. Langer has been appointed director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. A specialist in condensed matter theory and statistical physics, Langer is a professor of physics at UC-Santa Barbara and has been a member of the school's staff since 1982. Langer has advanced scientific understanding of how melting and freezing processes produce intricate patterns in objects as diverse as snowflakes and metallic alloys. Langer earned his B.S. at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1955 and his Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham in 1958. He previously taught physics at Carnegie-Mellon University. ITP was established in 1979 by the National Science Foundation for the purpose of contributing to the progress of theoretical physics.
