Rush HoltWIKIMEDIA, UNITED STATES CONGRESSThe American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has chosen Rush Holt (D-NJ) to succeed Alan Leshner as chief executive officer of the professional organization and executive publisher of Science and its related journals. Holt, who is retiring from the US House of Representatives at the end of his eighth term, is a research physicist and former faculty at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.

“Efforts to advance science, promote public engagement with science and technology, and ensure that accurate scientific information informs policy decisions—core AAAS activities—have also been central to Holt’s long record of public service,” the association said in a statement announcing Holt’s hire.

Holt, who has represented New Jersey in Congress since 1999, earned a PhD in physics from New York University in 1981. He was awarded an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship in 1982.

“I look forward to supporting the association’s mission to advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world, for the benefit of all people,” he said in the AAAS statement.
