BIOMEDICINE

Stirring undergraduate interest in research and teaching careers in the medical and biological sciences. $61 million from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to 51 U.S. universities. (Grants range from $1 million to $2 million each: top awardees were the University of Chicago, the University of Colorado, Cornell University, and Indiana University.)

Jacob K. Javits Neuroscience Investigatorship: Characterization of cell surface components that contribute to the normal development and function of nerve fibers. $2.5 million over seven years from the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders to La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation: W. Stalicup.

Increased efforts to locate tropical rain forest plants, which are potential sources for anti-AIDS and anti-cancer therapies. $150,000 from the Metropolitan Life Foundation to The New York Botanical Garden: M. Balick.

Outstanding Young Research Professorship: Determination of the pattern of blood flow in the eye for possible appplication to human blindness research. $150,000 over three years from the Parsons Foundation to Northwestern University: M.R. Glucksberg.

GEOLOGY

Training and education of University of Texas and Indonesian geologists and development of a new geological base in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, $1 million over three years from Freeport-McMoRan Inc., New Orleans, La., to the University of Texas, Austin: R.E. Boyer.

GENERAL SCIENCE

Strengthening of academic departments and support for individual science and engineering researchers in four states. $1 .8 million each over three years from NSF to Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Dakota.

Development of life science research through the introduction of new courses in structural biology, as well as support for a five-year program to increase undergraduate research, faculty. and laboratory facilities for physical biochemistry. molecular biology and bioengineering. $1 million over five years from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to Dartmouth College: P.B. Pipes.
