When time permitted in 1969, I joined the hepatitis research lab of Alfred Prince and M. Edward Kaighn at the New York Blood Center, where liver cells were being grown in culture, and began to try out my ideas. It was then a small step to the artificial liver concept based upon hollow fibers as a supporting matrix. Carl F. W.
