But the American Chemical Society's Chemical Abstract Service has recently achieved a milestone in its own right. The CAS chemical registry is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year by recording its 10 millionth chemical substance. CAS, which abstracts and indexes all the world's literature on chemical science and technology, began its computer registry in 1965. The 10 millionth registered substance was synthesized by two Japanese scientists, Ken Kanematsu and Shigeru Nagashima of Kyushu University, and is an intermediate product in a series of chemical reactions leading toward the synthesis of forskolin, a naturally occurring chemical that helps regulate cellular processes in animals and plants.
