Banned UNH prof. reinstated

I just got a call from John Collins, former chair of the biochemistry and molecular biology department at the University of New Hampshire, who told me that as of today he is officially reinstated as a professor. Collins had been banned from campus since last June after an incident involving another professor, and then dean of research, Stacia Sower, which you can read about linkurl:here;http://www.the-scientist.com/news/display/53383/ and linkurl:here.;http://www.the-scientist.com/news/display/53581/ Collins was linkurl:cleared;http://www.the-scientist.com/blog/display/53782/ of all criminal charges last October. A linkurl:permanent restraining order;http://www.the-scientist.com/blog/display/53857/ was not granted against him, either. This morning, Collins told me, he got back to his laboratory and met with his graduate student to get research up and running again. He is meeting with the dean of the university today to discuss the details of his reinstatement. Collins still has a formal grievance filed against the university for stripping him of the position of department chair. "The last line of the university's reinstatement letter to me said 'now we can put the June incident behind us,'" said Collins. "And I said, 'oh no we can't.'" University spokesperson Erika Mantz said it is a personnel matter and she could not discuss it further. Sower left today for Japan for two weeks.
