Studies from our laboratory (Hot Team, The Scientist, July 23, 1990, page 20) and others had shown that glucose transport in mammalian cells was mediated by a family of structurally related proteins that have distinct patterns of expression. Of these proteins, the glucose transporter isoform expressed in muscle and adipose tissue was of intense scientific and medical interest, since it could be the key to understanding the molecular basis for decreased glucose uptake in diabetes mellitus.
