Maturation of this subject was recognized by publication of six articles in Science, of which this was one. Decades of cell biology had established principles; now, molecular biology allows in-depth analysis. Examples of the genetic and molecular events that are involved and are of great current excitement include cdc2 kinases, cyclins, p53, and the retinoblastoma gene product.
