That message makes Connors, a professor of mathematics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the winner of THE SCIENTIST’s slogan contest (see November 2, 1987, p. 2). Readers were invited to submit “the best phrase to describe the pending shortage of scientific manpower in the United States” in five words or less.
Connors tried but failed to get a local slogan competition started on his campus. “So I was sitting at the desk one day, and the SOS idea just leapt to mind,” he said.
However, he will be able to spread the word by using the supply of bumper stickers and T-shirts imprinted with his slogan that he’ll receive. The slogan also will be forwarded to the Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology, a Washington, D.C.-based group of professional societies and R&D corporations.
