The mission of the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research (MSMR) is to educate the general public, the media, and the state legislature about the importance of and growing need for biomedical, biotechnology, and product safety research. As president, Debra Cavalier guides the legislative and education programs of the society.

During Cavalier's tenure, MSMR has had a 100 percent success rate in defeating state legislation that would hinder vital medical research. In 1988, the society effected the passage of landmark legislation that made it a felony to trespass on or damage a research facility in Massachusetts.
