An artificial neural network (ANN) is a type of machine learning that identifies patterns from data to make predictions about its features.

Scientists like Grace Lindsay, computational neuroscientist at New York University, use ANNs to study how the brain works and to analyze image data. In an interview with The Scientist, Lindsay explains the basic structure and function of ANNs.
