Simon Foote (Immunoparasitology Unit, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Victoria, Australia): "The initial path for the Human Genome Project has been well delineated. Initially, high-resolution maps, both genetic and physical, must be constructed, followed by the positioning of genes on the physical map.

"The genetic map is the project's anchor in reality. It will allow phenotypes to be directly 'attached' to positions on the chromosomes and will add an independent quality check on the order of the physical map. High-resolution genetic maps are now available with the theoretical ability to place a phenotype to within an average 1Mbase.
