The discovery of cyclins played an important part in bringing together various threads of evidence from studies of frog oocyte maturation and yeast genetics. Cyclins, combine with the cell-cycle protein p34cdc2 to form the mitotic kinase.

"This paper was the first to show that cyclins were present in a vertebrate and were not some specialized curiosity found only in sea urchins and clam embryos. Second, it provided the first direct evidence that cyclin synthesis could explain the long-known protein synthesis requirement for entry into mitosis.
