(Nature, 336:164-7, 1988), the number of citations each receives will be greater. Add to that a topic of personal relevance to almost every scientist (with a population frequency of nearly 1%, schizophrenia occurs among the family or acquaintances of almost everyone), and both papers will be noted. The citations of our work, however, are almost certainly secondary to the subject of, if not the citations of, the `companion' paper. Their paper presented evidence for alleles at a single genetic locus ...
